Description:

Reporting to the Creative Services Manager and working alongside our Sr. Graphic Designer, cbm is looking for a volunteer to play a vital role in enhancing the layout/appearance of specific collateral/promotional/ educational pieces.

Attractive and engaging materials assist cbm in conveying its message of focusing on people with disabilities.

Quality pieces adhere to one of our Core Values of excellence in all we do.

Primary Responsibilities:

Preparing press-ready files from existing design for:

·         Work with Senior Graphic Designer to produce Direct Mail packages, Ads, and collateral materials

·         Work with Manager of Direct Mail to carry out copy changes during design process

·         Work with Creative Services Manager to ensure files are properly uploaded to printers, and stored for archival purposes

·         Work with Creative Services Manager to put together resource books for use throughout cbm

Qualifications:

·         Strong understanding of design principles and typography

·         Ability to take direction        

·         Excellent attention to detail

·         Experience working in a Mac environment

·         Experience working in Adobe CS4

·         High organizational and time-management skills

·         A desire and willingness to learn

·         Reliable transportation (no public Transportation)

Time Commitment:

·         Weekly commitment preferred (Monday and/or Friday)

·         Number of hours per week is flexible

·         Minimum two – month commitment

Orientation/Training:

·         Orientation on first day of volunteering provided by the Volunteer Coordinator

·         On the job training (one-on-one with the Senior Graphic Designer)

·         Ongoing training and support

Reporting To: Program Advocacy Officer

Time Commitment: Once a week for 2-4 hours per week and when there are events

The volunteer will be assisting a staff member with a disability to advocate for the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of society in Canada and in developing countries, through correspondence, document compilation and public awareness building events.

Responsibilities:

·         Assist in research and proof-reading of correspondence and documents related to networking and advocacy for disability-inclusive development

·         Assist in public awareness events to promote the work of cbm and our advocacy goals

·         Speaking to the public about the Talking Book Library and ways to include people with disabilities in communities

·         Inputting Contact Information and organizing them through Outlook and Skype

Skills & Knowledge & Other Volunteer Requirements

·       Computer Skills in Word, Outlook, Internet, Facebook, Twitter

·       Perform Research and Prepare Reports and should be able to edit

·       Attention to details and accuracy is important

·       Friendly and out-going, able to approach strangers at events

·       Takes initiatives in introducing cbm and disability issues

·       Not easily bored or frustrated with requests for assistance

·       Enjoys Using social media for networking and awareness building

·       Willing to travel to different locations in the GTA, ability to drive

Challenges and Boundaries of the Position:

To assist with the day to day functioning of the Talking Book Library.

• Circulation – pulling the required audio books off of the shelves and putting them into a container to go out into the mail based on the client’s names for that day
• Mail Processing – Sorting, arranging and organizing incoming audio books and sorting back on the shelves
• Tape Reproduction – Creating new audio books for circulation using the master tape for duplication. Also copying and replacing damaged material

cbm Canada is looking for volunteers to assist in the technical aspects of Talking Book Production.

cbm produces Talking Books to bring the reading experience to those who are visually and print disabled.
Our Talking Books are produced to the ‘DAISY’ standard. Each book occupies one CD, and volunteers are being sought to assist in the technical operations required to produce these CD’s.

Responsibilities:

• Auditing narrator produced raw audio for accuracy 
•  Processing the audio to create a clean consistent sound
• Generating the files required to implement Talking Books in the DAISY format

Skills & Knowledge & Other Volunteer Requirements:

• Intermediate computer knowledge – How to navigate a computer
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to work as part of a team of volunteers
• Attention to Detail
• Self starter
• Reliable Transportation

• The Senior Daisy Talking Book Production Volunteers will be available for guidance and assistance on a regular basis 
•  Audio Production Technician will also be available for assistance
• All volunteers enter into a 3 month probationary period (90 days from the first day of volunteering). At this time the volunteer and manager will discuss whether to continue the work agreement, change or discontinue. You are entitled to feedback on your performance
• Tasks will be evaluated on a project by project basis. As the volunteer becomes familiar, the APT will assign new projects and responsibilities
• Volunteer is welcome to provide ideas and suggestions and will receive feedback from the Audio Production Technician

To support the Talking Book Library by providing narration of a print book, this is then converted into a daisy talking book.

Responsibilities:

• Reading aloud the print books into a microphone to produce audio files for individuals with visual or print disabilities

• All volunteers enter into a 3 month probationary period (90 days from the first day of volunteering). At this time the volunteer and manager will discuss whether to continue the work agreement, change or discontinue.
• Will receive feedback on quality of recordings
• Informal meetings and reviews can take place at the discretion of the manager

• Generating the files required to implement Talking Books in the DAISY format

Skills & Knowledge & Other Volunteer Requirements:

• Advanced computer knowledge
• Have experience or an interest in teaching or training others
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to work as part of a team
